A typological study of the pottery from their sites and tombs indicates that the cultural complex represented by the site at Zhengjiapo can be called the Zhengjiapo culture and that repre- sented by the tombs at Liujia the Liujia culture. Both are aboriginal cultures distributed in the western Guanzhong region and can be divided into 8 groups of 6 periods lasting more than five hundred years, with the earliest limiting point corresponding to the lower stratum of Erligang and the latest limiting point to the fourth phase of the Yin Ruins culture. The Zhengjiapo culture,in its early period,is distributed in the valley of the Qishui River. Its pottery types are mainly the joint-crotch li tripod,deep-bellied basin,carinate-shouldered jar and zun vase. The dead were entombed into shaft earth pits,in an extended supine position, head pointing to the north or northwest. The complex originated in the Shuan'an type of cul- ture.In the late period, its cultural aspect is close to that of the early Western Zhou remains at Fengxi and Qiyi,so the complex belongs to the predynastic Zhou culture. The Liujia culture in its early period is distributed around Baoji City. The principal pottery is of the high-necked hollowed-legged li,single-or double-eared jar,and jar with ears on the belly. The dead were buried in catacombs,in either an extended supine or a flexed sidelong po- sition, head pointing to the northeast. This complex is developed from the Qijia culture. It be- longs to the Jiang group of the Qiang people. In the late period,it merged wholly in the predy- nastic Zhou culture and its own characteristics are difficult to distinguish archaeologically. The appearance of the high-necked hollowed-legged jar in the predynastic Zhou culture and the cari- nate-shouldered jar in the Liujia culture depresents the mutual exchange and influence between the two cltures.
