Abstract In his Course in General Linguistics, Saussure puts forth the concept of semiology. Yet while regarding language as a semiotic system, he divides up the field of study by successive sharp dichotomies, resulting in one half of each dichotomy being excluded. Thus ambiguities and paradoxes arise as to his theory of linguistic signs, especially the arbitrariness of linguistic signs. However, those ambiguities and paradoxes ale the result of his insistence on a pure liguistic study and his exclusion of external linguistics from internal linguistics.
