Objective To observe the role of serum Cystatin C on organ damage in patients with essential hypertension. Methods Sixty patients with essential hypertension were included in the study.Serum Cystatin C level was measured by using particle-enhanced turbidimetric assay.Left ventricular mass index(LVMI) was evaluated by using ultrasound images.Cuff-oscillometric method was adopted to measure 24-hour blood pressure. Results Serum Cystatin C level was correlated with creatinine clearance, urine microamoun albuminuria, mean 24 h systolic blood pressure(24 h-SBP) and LVMI.Both albumin excretion rate(AER) and serum Cystatin C level were independently correlated with mean 24 h-SBP.AER was correlated with HDL-cholesterol.Conlusion Serum Cystatin C level is an early marker to predict the severity of end-organ damage in patients with essential hypertension.
