Abstract The name of Gansu province consisting of two Chinese characters derives from the first characters of the names of two prefectures under its jurisdiction,Ganzhou and Suzhou, now Zhangye and Jiuquan respectively. In the middle of the 11th century, the Western Xia regime established the Gansu Troops in Ganzhou, and this initiated the use of Gansu as a name.In the Yuan Dynasty,Gansu began to be given a position of provincial agency of imperial authorities, having under its jurisdiction the Hexi Corridor, the Huang River valley, and most of what is now Ningxia. In the Ming Dynasty,Gansu was set up as Gansu Garrison in the charge of a Gansu Imperial Inspector, controlling and exploiting the areas of Hexi,Xining, etc. In the Qing Dynasty,Gansu was formally established as a province, administering what is now Gansu,Ningxia and Northwestern Qinghai. In 1928,Ningxia and Qinghai were set up as two separate provinces, leaving Gansu to the rest of the area under its jurcsdiction,an area smaller than before. And now Gansu remains to be what it was since then.
