This paper is mainly intended to take as its subject the cognitive_pragmatic features of language reports. In contrast to the traditional definition based on indirectdirect categories, this paper includes as language reports any stretch of language where 'another voice' is involved. While traditional approaches to the study of language reports tended to pay much attention to the syntactic changes and stylistic functions, the author attempts to focus on the cognition_related aspects in these reports. With the analysis of the examples taken from real_life communication both in English and Chinese, it will be argued that since language reports are shaped by the interplay of linguistic and non_linguistic factors, they can be best explained in a theoretical framework which represents a knowledge_for_use conception. A cognitive_pragmatic approach to language reports reveals that cognitive mechanisms are responsible for the meaning of reported language and can also account for the meaning structure of these linguistic expressions.
