AIM:To study the influence of social support on the mental heath of undergraduates in physical cultures,so as to explore the probability of intervention. METHODS:Investigations of mental heath status and social support conditions were conducted in 136 undergraduates from physical cultures by using symptom checklist(SCL 90) and social support questionnaire(SSQ),and the results were compared with the internal norm, and the correlation of each factor in the two questionnaires and the relationship between mental symptoms and social supports were analyzed. RESULTS:In comparison of scores of SCL 90,the scores of compulsion(1.53±0.64) and interpersonal relationship(1.49±0.73) of the undergraduates from physical cultures were lower than those of internal normal youths(19 to 29 years old)(1.67±0.60 and 1.70±0.64)(P< 0.05). Among the 136 undergraduates, 20 cases(15%) had mental symptoms. The scores of subjective support(4.60±1.20),utility of support(2.33±1.02) were obviously lower in the undergraduates with symptoms than those without symptoms(3.24±1.51 and 1.29±0.67)(P< 0.05).Except for the scores of somatization and psychosis, the scores of other factors in SCL 90 were all negatively correlated with those of social support (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION:There are insignificant differences in the general mental health level of the undergraduates coming from physical cultures, partial students have mild or moderate mental symptoms, and social support has significant effect on the mental health of undergraduates.
