摘要
经济全球化迅猛发展的一个重要特征是英语语言在世界范围内通用,越来越成为一种标准语言。人们在享受经济发展带来的成就和随一体化俱来的便利时,不免担忧英语代表的英美文化或基督教文明会对其他文化构成威胁或将取而代之以使自己一统天下。本文试图从语言的利益化、语言与文化的貌合神离、世界语言霸权简史三个方面对此问题做出回答。
One of the important features of economic globalization is the common use of the English language. While people are enjoying the benefits of economic successes, it is worried that the Anglo American culture might replace all the other cultures in the world. This paper aims to give a rational explanation of the problem from three aspects. Firstly, the interest seeking feature of English is making the English language into a tool. That is, it is less than expected as representing a kind of culture. Secondly, it seems that English represents one culture. Actually, it represents many cultures. Thirdly, the history of linguistic development indicates that although one language may dominate over a period of time, it is always living together with many other languages. The conclusion is that one culture cannot be easily overcome by another. So the fear that Anglo American culture will replace others is pointless.
