The past forty-six years in Japan have seen three rounds of struggle over tampering with history. These struggles have hinged on textbooks that purported to record the official history of Japan, which some people try to make use of to deny the crimes committed by Japan in its wars of aggression. In order to defend the dignity of science and keep to the road of peace and development the broad masses of Japanese people have persevered in their struggle for a long period of time. When the cold war ended, with the strengthening of internal forces seeking Japan's reemergence as a political and military power, and the growing international trend to reconsider the punishment of war criminals and war reparations, the forces trying to tamper with history in Japan have become more reckless. They have expanded their activities beyond the ideological sphere and into the economic and diplomatic fields. History textbooks and post-war education now faces their severest test.
