The implicitness characteristic of the Chinese language affords a blessing for literary creation, and entitles the translators enormous freedom in the interpretation of the source text. The implied subject serves to testify to this freedom. Coincidentally this advantage turns out to be a pitfall in interlingual translation. The translators are simultaneously confined by such factors as the prior knowledge of their own, the intention of the source text, and the characteristics of the target language. This article aims to probe into the scope of interpretation by focusing on the choice of pronouns in Chinese-English poetry translation.
