The present article is an attempt to study the metaphorical features of everyday English from the perspective of cognitive science and cognitive linguistics. On the basis of the analysis of a large number of examples, the authors have come to the following conclusions: metaphorization is a universal feature of the English language (even any language); and in fact many discrete expressions which, from a traditional point of view, are not considered as metaphors, are closely related to each other at the level of conceptual metaphor; it is a way of thinking and also of organizing our daily experience. Figurative language does not result from the breach of the cooperative principles of conversation and its comprehension does not occur in stages as pragmatists have proposed: first understand its literal meaning, and then derive its figurative meaning on the basis of the discovery that the literal meaning is anomalous.
