The Piyang-Dongga site lies in western Tibet and is a large site, consisting of the remains of temples, grottoes, pagodas and other Buddhist buildings as well as ancient tombs.Of them the earlier Gelintang and Dukang halls and Grotto No.79 were excavated in 1997,which brought to light a batch of exquisite works of Buddhist art as well as some tools of production and household wares.Meanwhile, remain of a unique early pagoda was found in the survey. The above findings provide crucial clues for further research into the nature and date of the Piyang-Dongga site.Referring to historic documents, the author considers that the Gelintang Hall was built shortly after the founding of the Guge Kingdom(ca.the end of AD 10th century).According to textual records,Piyang-Dongga site was a holy place for wedding ceremonies and coronations of the royal family in the period of the Guge Kingdom, even once became the religious and political center opposite to Zhaburang where the royal palace was situated. The plentiful Buddhist remains known from the site confirm literary evidence. As the first large-scale excavation at Piyang-Dongga,the work in 1997 furnishes rich material data for studying the history of the Guge Kingdom in western Tibet.
