摘要 In the present paper the author examines the pictorial program of the lacquered dish from Tomb No. 3 of the Eastern Jin period excavated at the Jiangxi Nanchang Railway Station. He points out that the emperor in the picture is a seeker to meet with Taoist immortals while the four worthyscholars are his fellow believers, and all of them have been given new meanings in the new context. Withthis inspiration, the treatise analyses further the recluse scholar subjects in tombs of Southern andNorthern Dynasties such as the images of the seven worthies of the bamboo grove and Rong Qiqi.Through inquiry into their implication and function in burial rites, the author believes that these figuresare painted on the principle of stylization, whereas their original individual characters and plots havedimmed and became a symbol of idealized recluse scholars or immortals. This kind of subject expressed the burial concept commonly accepted in society, and so became popular among the people of differentsocial strata.
