In this paper the values of Longyou Grottoes and the problems encountered in terms of their protection are explored. Longyou Grottoes are considered as an example of early construction utilizing underground space. Its architectural arrangement is full of amazing features, the scale and structural type of which are extraordinarily rational. Its decorative art also reflects characteristics of ancient Chinese civilization. Some of their construction methods are hard to pinpoint. Longyou Grottoes have high values for the research of ancient Chinese civilization, arts, and construction techniques. The author shows that the following factors have long-term influences on the protection of the grottoes: appropriateness of grotto structure, geological condition, environmental changes and long-term strength of rock material. Thus, the research on the protection of Longyou Grottoes requires cooperation of different professionals. To ensure long-term stability of the grottoes, an integrated treatment is deemed to be necessary. The author suggests it is necessary to pay more attention to the monitoring and analyzing the variation of ground water table, air composition inside the grottoes, and physical and chemical properties of the air at present.
