Root-boxing and rhizosphere section-cutting in the field were adopted to study the configuration and dynamic formation of root system in flue-cured tobacco with the help of a CID-600 image-processing system .The results showed that the biomass of the root system of flue-cured tobacco was exponentially decreased with the increase of soil depth, reaching its maximum in 0-20 cm ; the configurations of the root system took the 'T' shapes in different stages of growth, and were mainly composed of its initial lateral roots whose distributing angle ranged between 0°and 90°, and whose biomass mainly concentrated between 20°and 50°, accounting for 60.7% of the total root-system ; the secondary lateral roots of the root system mainly distributed between 50°-80°, accounting for 56% of the total root-system; the adventitious roots of the root-system could be divided into three groups depended on their initiate positions and sequences of growth, and became more parallel to the ridge surface as their positions were near the upper layer of soil; the different ways of base fertilizer use in production did not significantly change the T-shaped configuration of the root system, which was typical in upper soil and a typical in lower soil, but had an effect on the distribution of the roots in different depth of soil. The biomass of the root system was exponentially increased during the seedling stage and the stage from transplanting to maturing (not including transplanting shock), and linearly increased with time in the same depth layer of soil.
