Receutly the authors have investigated the Quaternary System in Maoshan Range. According to the regional correlation on stratigraphic sequence and sporopollen assemblage, the existence of Lower Pleistocene Yajishan Formation and the distribution area of basaltic gravel have been determined.The bottom of the formation exposes at 95-100 m altitude while the roof has been corroded with residual altitude of 139 m.The thickness of the formation is more than 40 m.This discovery has solved the hiatus of Lower Pleistocene series in southwest Jiangsu Province for over half and century and provided basic data and evidence for the research of regional geological evolution and neotectonic movement, particularly the new movement of Maodong fault. The paper also calculated the movement velocity of Maodong fault based on the above results which provides reliable basis of seismic assessment of the fault zone.
