A colour reaction on mercury with antipyrinyldiazoamino-2, 4-dinitrobenzene (APCDBT) and its optimum developing conditions were studied. In the presence of Tween-80, at pH range of 10. 2-12. 3, a 1 : 2(Hg : APDNBT) yellow complex was formed. A dual-wavelength spectrophotometric method for the determination of mercury with APDNBT was established, the reference and measurement wavelengths are 445 nm and 538 nm, respectively. The apparent molar absorptivity is 2. 10× 105 L · mol-1 · cm-1. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0-15 μgHg/25 mL. The method has been applied to the determination of mercury in natural water and urine with relative standard deviation of 2. 3% and recovery of 97% to 104%.
