Objective To investigate the characteristics of degenerative changes of lumbar spine in fighter pilots, Methods Sixteen elder pilots (Group A, average age 42), 13 younger pilots (Group B, average age 27) and 15 elder ground personal (Group C, average age 43) served as subjects, CT of lumbar spine and follow up CT 4 years later were taken. The degree of degenerative changes was graded by the same specialist, and the data of two CT findings of three groups were compared statistically. Results As compared with degenerative change findings of initial CT, the incidence of disc herniation increased significantly in all 3 groups, the number of osteophytes significantly increased in group C and stenosis of spinal canal increased significantly in group A. The differences of CT degenerative findings between group A and group C became significantly less prominent in the follow up examination. Conclusion It is suggested that the degenerative changes of lumbar spine of fighter pilots occurred earlier than ground personnel. The differences of degenerative changes between elder pilots and elder ground personnel diminished gradually along with the aging.
