摘要
《红楼梦》是中国传统文化孕育出来的优秀文学作品。其中大量的颜色词、象征词、称呼语、宗教词以及谐音词中都蕴涵着丰富的民族特色。文章通过大量的译例比较分析了杨宪益夫妇和大卫.霍克斯、约翰.明福德两个完整英译本在文化词语处理时采取的不同方法以及达到的不同效果,得出二者在翻译文化词语时所采取的不同态度。
A Dream of Red Mansion is one of the greatest works cultivated from the traditional Chinese culture. A great number of culture- loaded words concerning color, symbol, appellation, religion and homophone are in use. This article analyses the different methods and the different results in translating culturally loaded words in two translated versions by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang and by David Hawkes and John Minfold respecitively, and it points out their different attitudes in translating cultural words.
