Plants depend on fine roots for water and mineral uptake.Due to high annual input and fast turnover rate of fine root, fine root decomposition may contribute more to the organic matter decomposition than the aboveground litter fall in many forest ecosys- tem.Fine root decomposition is one of the major pathways of carbon and nutrients cyc- ling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the importance of fine roots decomposition has not been stressed yet in China and fine roots researches are seldom conducted.
