The middle and late Eastern Han Dynasty through to the early Three Kingdoms period witnessed a transformational stage when bamboo/wood slips and paper were both used as the medium of literary writing.Paper as a new medium of transmission started as an informal medium closely related to popular culture and entertainment. The fall of the Eastern Han Dynasty sped up the replacement of bamboo/wood slips by paper.By providing more space for writing at a lower cost, paper made it possible for writers to try new modes of thought that were different from when they had to write on bamboo/wood slips: they could spend less time organizing before writing, the texts could be much more inclusive, and expression became more direct and free. The establishment of paper as the major medium of writing and the change of transmission methods directly resulted in a display of the power of literature that surpassed time and space.Literature became more influential and expressive, and the epistolary literary style became popular. The new textual medium also gave rise to stylistic changes.Stylistic studies became more sophisticated, and quotations became common in writing as the literati had more access to knowledge. As paper books gained more importance, popular texts for entertainment were raised to a higher position. But on the other hand, the change of medium also caused disarray in the passing down of traditional texts.
