The four elements, namely, air, earth, water, and fire, are composing factors of the theory about the origin of the universe in the ancient West. T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets consists of a suite of poems structured by the four elements. By virtue of the symbolic meanings of the elements, the poem reveals the existing pains and predicaments of mankind in time and earthly world (the temporality in eternal time and the sadness of existence), contemplates eternal time and the extrication of human pains. Where is the consolation of time and existence? Besides the way of seeking salvation by love and religion, all points to now and here, ″And all is always now″—the transcendent, simultaneous and vast now.
