Objective To establish cardiac arrest models of the mice that would lay a foundation for the experimental studies of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Methods 15 mice without distinction of sex (body weight 30 ~ 50 g) were anesthetized and a catheter was inserted into the left carotid artery for the measurement of aortic pressure. ECG was monitored continuously during the experiment. Ventricular fibrillation or pulseless electrical activity was induced and maintained by transoesophageal cardiac pacing. Conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation began 4 min later. Results Transoesophageal fast cardiac pacing caused rapid drop of blood pressure in all the 15 animals. ECG showed pulseless electrical activity in 14 of 15 animals, asystole was in the remaining one animal and no sustained ventricular fibrillation was induced after the cardiac pacing was terminated. All the animals were successfully resuscitated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation 4 min after cardiac arrest. Conclusion The cardiac arrest model of the mice induced by transoesophageal cardiac pacing has the satisfactory operability, repetition and stability, which can satisfy fundamental study on cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
