Objective: To understand the relationship between newborn hypoxic and ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and dysfunction of kidney in high altitude. Methods: The level of blood urea nitrogen (BuN) and creatinine (Cr) were examined in 116 newborns with HIE and 88 healthy newborns. Results: The level of BuN 〉7.14mmol/L was in 96 HIE and Cr 〉88.4mmol/L was in 91 HIE, these were higher than those in the controls (P 〈 0.01 ). Conclusion: The higher level of BuN and Cr would correct with the dysfunction of kidney in the newborn with HIE at high altitude.
