A biomechanical study of the occipital-atlanto-axial complex after odontoid process fracture

To compare the biomechanical features of the C_0 ̄C1 and C_1 ̄C_2 after odontoid process fracture,six fresh cadaver specimens of C_0 ̄C_3 were studied. We reproduced type Ⅱ odontoid fractures by osteotomy, and measured the three-dimensional rotation movement ranges of C_0  ̄ C_1 and C_1 ̄ C_2 by biomechanical method. The result indicated that the range of motion (ROM) at C_0 ̄C_1 did not have obviously changes, but there were increased ROM in extension and lateral bending at C_1  ̄C_2 after odontoid fracture,the extension and the average lateral bending ROM were 21. 50° and 7. 25°in normal,and 45.42°and 20. 81°in odontoid fracture,increased 52.7% and 65.1% respectively. The ROM of C_1  ̄C_2 have greatly significant differences between normal and odontoid fracture in extension and lateral bending(P<0. 01).
