The benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene(BTEX) sampled on campus site in Shanghai ambient air was detected in winter in 2004. Results indicated that the average concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene was 13.23 μg/m^3, 43.66 μg/m^3, 13.50 μg/m^3, 16.49 μg/m^3, 5.52 μg/m^3 respectively, which were higher than those in the similar functional zone in China and foreign cities. The concentrations were comparable to those near the main traffic roads in most foreign metropolis. Toluene was found to be the most abundant compound, about 47.3% of the total BTEX; The BTEX concentrations were higher in daytime than those in nighttime. Toluene was correlated significantly with ethlybenzene and xylene, but lacked strong correlation with benzene which indicated that the sources of benzene were different from TEX sources.
