This paper intends to make an application of Austin's Speech Act Theory and Scarle' s Indirect Act Theory to the interpretation of dramatic irony in Hamlet, which is one of the basic features of the play. This interpretation is done from the perspectives of the macro - speech act (the communication between the dramatis personae and the audience) and micro - speech act (the communication between the dramatis personae in the play) to explore the double context feature of dramatic irony and to understand the intention of the dramatis personae. The investigation demonstrates that, like the irony in our everyday life, dramatic irony can also be described in the framework of speech act.
