The present paper attempts to investigate the unequal power relationship between two characters in The Dumb Waiter by Harold Pinter, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005. Within the notion of discourse framework, the play is examined in the light of the distribution, classification and pattern of the challenging moves, and a linguistic explanation of the dramatic effect in the light of critical discourse analysis is provided. The analysis indicates that the dramatic meaning derives not only from what characters say, but also from how they say, as well as their conversation behaviors.
