Objective To investigate the current level of nurses' knowledge, attitude and clinical practice regarding pain. Methods Four hundred and eleven nurses were surveyed by a questionnaire investigation in nurses' knowledge and attitude survey regarding pain (NKAS). Results The mean score of NKAS was 15.18±3.64, and the average accurate response rate was 38.92%. There were no statistically significant differences in the scores; among nurses in terms of age, years of service, education background, or career position (P〉0.05 for all). 66.91% of the nurses didn't receive pain education; 73.97% of them didn't conduct pain assessment. Nurses who had received pain education, implemented pain assessment, worked in the units of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy had significantly higher mean scores ( P〈0.01 for all). The major barriers to the effective pain management included me-dical staff's lack of pain knowledge, concern of drug-related side-effects and failure to give priority to the pain management by the health care system. Conclusion It is an urgent task to step up pain education in China. And more effective measures should be taken in health eare system to improve the pain management.
