A new reaction between ruthenium (Ⅲ ) and molyodate and butylrhodamine B(BRB) has been investigated for the colorimetric determination of ruthenium in actual samples. The ion associate complex absorbs at 570nm with a molar absorptivity of 1.01×106 L·mol-1·cm-1 and a Sandell's sensitivity of 0. 11 ng·cm-2. Beer's law is valid at 0 -1. 4 ug/25ml for ruthenium. The detection limit was 3. 3ng/ml (n=8). The standard deviation are 8. 3×10-4-8.7×10--3. The relative standard deviation was in the range of 0. 8%-3.3%. Tolerance limits for 43 foreign ions were tested. Large quantities of other common metals were tolerated. The method is feasible for deterndnation of ruthenium in some ores and metallurgical products.
