The catchments space for water, used as an expedient to apply water space theory at catchment's scale, is one kind of space that encompasses river and its branches, linked lakes, wetlands and other kinds of water bodies, floodplain and partial slops that directly affected by flood, as well as the corresponding aquifer systems within these areas. The study was trying to achieve sustainable water by developing and implementing a new approach to integrated water and land management at catchment's scale. Therefore assessment of the function of catchment's space for water, aimed to calculate adjustment ability of space within catchment's area through influential factors and their relations to hydrological function. The lower Huolin River is located in arid and semi -arid area of China, where flood and drought often happen because rain is often available in abundance during the rainy season, and while it is very poorly distributed in dry season. Meanwhile intensive land use has reduced floodplain area of the lower Huolin River basin and caused seriously environmental and ecological problems like land degradation and soil alkalization. As a result of human impact, hydrological function of water storage, water detention and groundwater recharge within catchment's area have been decreased, and flood and drought disasters have been increased. Water resources problem tend to be serious in the future. Therefore the lower Huolin River was taken as an example in this study and the theory of catchment's space for water was applied to assess the function of catchment's space for water along the lower Huolin River, aiming at solving water resources problems and implementing integrated management of water and land along the lower Huolin River. Landform and land types, used as influential factors of catchment's space for water, were classified into 9 and 16 ranks respectively due to their water storage capacity and water detention capacity, and corresponding influential value is given to each classification of them. Assessment of function index, considered as an approach to assess their synthetic role of water storage and detention capacity within catchment's area, was set up through the relationship between landform and land types to water storage and detention capacity. A GIS -embodied spatial database was used to explore the capacity by assessment of function index of landform and land types of 1980. It was found that there were three higher value areas and two lower value areas along the lower Huolin River, and river corridor, lakes, wetlands and swamps play important role in water storage and water detention. After comparing the assessment of function index in 1980 and in 2000, degraded tendency from 1980 to 2000 was discussed. It showed that the function of catchment's space for water has decreased along the lower Huolin River, which was consistent with the fact of ecological and environmental changes within this area in recent 20 years, and the appliance of catchment's space for water was therefore helpful to solve water resource problems along the lower Huolin River. It also indicated that influential factors and their relations could be used as functional indexes to assess the function of catchment's space for water when there was no enough long-term experimental data.
