The preparation of the Pt/active carbon catalysts for the synthesis of p aminophenol (PAP) by the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was studied and the effect of the catalysts on the selectivity and the yield of PAP was discussed. It is found that higher active catalyst can be obtained when 95% ethanol with pH value of 7 to 8 is used as impregnation solvent; among the supports used in the experiments, coco shell charcoal with size of 0 05 μm is better. The results also showed that a complex catalyst with n Pd ∶ n Pt =1∶20 will give good results, the conversion of nitrobenzene and the yield of PAP reach 47% and about 81%, respectively.
