Born in the 1960s on the basis of direct observations of professional interpreters' practices, the interpretive theory of translation has had a bumpy course of development. On one hand, with the fruitful empirical and interdisciplinary researches it has inspired, the theory has established itself as a notable conceptual tool in translation studies. On the other hand, in part because it refused to jump on the bandwagon of the dominant structuralist linguistics in the beginning, it has never been far from controversies. The validity of its basic assumptions has been questioned. Its claims of scientific or theoretical status have been received with skepticism. It has been taken to task for allegedly committing all kinds of epistemological, methodological and terminological "crrors." Its demise as a theory has been pronounced. To find out whether these criticisms are indeed warranted, this article turns to one of the founders of the theory, Professor M. Lederer, using her 2005 article "In Defense and Justification of the Interpretative Theory of Translation" as the springboard for offering an analytical account of the core issues it has provoked.
