The fate and toxicity of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are influenced by their environmental behavior. The migration of PBDEs in ecological environment also determines their environmental effects. This is the basis on which the environmental and health risks of PBDEs are evaluated. This paper summarizes the current research progress of the environmental behavior and characteristics of PBDEs, comments on their environmental persistence and bio-accumulation, migration and distribution as well as environmental degradation, and explains the effects of PBDEs pollution on human health. The methods of PBDEs analysis, further study and prospects of PBDEs are discussed.
