Karst land collapse hazard in Tangshan City,China,is discussed in this paper.The geological environment in which karst land collapse takes place is stated.A key factor that causes karst land collapse in Tangshan lies in overexploitation of groundwater from underlying bedrock aquifer since the 1970s,which has lead to a continuous drop down of ground water level over the studied area in the recent 25 years.Earthquake is not a direct factor allowing collapse in Tangshan though earthquake may have destroyed the continuity of clay layers and made them easier to collapse.A new principle and method,termed the overlap analysis of single factor map for karst land collapse classification,is presented in this paper.A corresponding computer program KLC (Karst Land Collapse Classification) is created.On the basis of ground water flow field in 1990,a synthetic map of karst land collapse classification in Tangshan is compiled.The karst land collapse conditions are analyzed by application of the map overlap analysis method,and the collapse possibilities of each zone showed in the map are evaluated.
