In The Dead, the author James Joyce skillfully employs multiple pairs of opposite-symbols such as snow and galoshos, the dead and the alive, Ivos and Gabriel as well as the west and the east to develop the story and manifest its deepseated theme. The former of each binary opposite-symbols points to Ireland and the latter to the European Continent. The thesis here intends to expose Joyce' s profound meditation on the relationship between the nation and the world by thoroughly analyzing the structural tensions formed by the above-mentioned opposite-symbols.
