The study of international political economy started as a subfield and an empirical area of international relations in the United States, as opposed to the critical approach initially advanced by the British scholar Susan Strange who sought to subsume the two areas of economic and political studies under a consistent logic of international political economy. Although the two IPE approaches appear to have divergent analytical bases and intellectual ambitions, the crucial issue of state-market relations under globalization may constitute an empirical and conceptual link between the two traditions. The pursuit of this research program requires that IPE scholars continue to dismantle the discipline barriers between IPE and the other subfields of political science, such as comparative politics and comparative political economy, which, in turn, will help strengthen the analytical foundations of IPE studies as a distinctive academic area.
