In this paper, a case study on land use change in Ejinhollo Banner, a semiarid farming-pasturing ecotone in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is carried out. The maps of land use in the banner in 1984, 1991 and 2000 at scale of 1 : 100 000 and the map of landscape divisions are used in the study. Based on the quantitative index system, the spatiotemporal change of land use patterns and its regional differences are analyzed. The results show that the grasslands are the main land use type in the district, and the area of grasslands occupies 59.03%-69.33% of total area. Viewing from the change extent, annual change rate and dynamic change of land use types, the areas of building lands and woodlands were enlarged by 162.75% and 114.70%, but that of mobile sandlands and grasslands were reduced by 37.11% and 8.30 %, respectively during the period of 1984 - 1991. During the period of 1991 - 2000, however, the areas of woodlands and shrubbery lands were reduced by 61.43% and 88.47%, whereas that of mobile sandlands and grasslands were enlarged by 102.28% and 17.45 %, respectively. Viewing from the spatial stability, the grasslands and waters were the most stable, their unchanged proportions were 66.71% -77.05 % and about 50 % respectively, then croplands (about 30 % ), and the stability of other land use types was poor. The spatial change of grasslands and waters was not so significant, but that of building lands, woodlands, shrubbery lands and mobile sandlands was significant.
