North and northeast of the anterior pavilion of the Epang Palace-site, two spots of building vestiges, i.e. the remains of Nos. 3 and 5 buildings of the Shanglinyuan Garden-site, were excavated in the winter of 2005 and January 2006. The former is a structure on a platform and consists of a rammed-earth foundation and a three-tier building on it. Column holes and plinths along with fragments of the wall and floor surfaces were found in the remains of corridors. The latter has been seriously damaged, only two groups of drain channels remaining in a fairly good condition. The building materials from the two building-sites date largely from the Warring States period. This evidence and the form and location of the buildings suggest that the excavated ruins must belong to the Qin State Shanglinyuan Garden of the Warring States period and have nothing to do with the construction of the Epang Palace. Building No. 3 may have continued to function down to the late Western Han period.
