Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern dynasties in the history of Chinese civilization are the periods of aesthetic and art awareness based on what is called “self-consciousness of human being”. Since the human activities are intrinsically the activities of civilization, “self-consciousness of human being” is intrinsically the consciousness of civilization. The philosophical sect in Wei and Jin dynasties forms the metaphysics of the value of life by going into the fundamental and the incidental, the essence and the expression, and approving of the civilization brimming with human nature. The metaphysics discards negative Taoist attitude giving up efforts and letting it be, at the same time, starts Confucian moral monism. So we have ground to believe that the philosophical sect in the Wei and Jin dynasties has expressed “self-consciousness of human being” of the history of Chinese civilization. “Awareness of art” in Wei and Jin dynasties takes an important part of “self-consciousness of human being”. Theory of literature and art in Wei and Jin dynasties, which seeks the extreme state of art ideal, has formed art metaphysics under the tension of the value and the method of art. Therefore, art can break away from morality and politics, achieving the basis of metaphysics that it needs. The awareness of art of Wei-Jin, Northern and Southern dynasties lasted briefly. It appeared with “self-consciousness of human being” and had been vanished for long as the philosophical sect in Wei and Jin dynasties disappeared. For this reason, aesthetic and art awareness in Wei-Jin, Northern and Southern dynasties has unique significance without parallel in history.
