The author first gives a brief survey of the historical development of the use of you and thou. Then through some examples a brief account is given on how the second personal pronouns are used in Shakespeare＇ s dramas. It is argued that the appropriate translation of you and thou is of vital importance in transferring the subtle implication of the original. The author maintains that in translating the pronouns appropriately the trans- lator should decide whether they are marked or unmarked, it depends on the context.
