An investigations were carried out into the effects of microalloying elements such as RE and strong carbide forming elements (Nb,V,Ti etc.)on the structure and properties of low alloy cast steel. The experimental results showed that the strong carbide forming elements including Nb,V,Ti etc.could produce grain refinement and precipitating strengthening, thus markedly increasing the strength of the cast steel. The rare earths, in addition to grain refinement, could improve the morphology and distribution of non inclusions in the cast steel so as to obviously increase the toughness. The low alloy cast steel treated by the combination of above mentioned elements could obtain the optimal effects of strengthening and toughening for the cast steel.
