An important change to the popular worship system in the Song Dynasty was the breaking down of the traditional notion that sacrifice to local deities could only be offered locally, with temples being built to worship gods introduced from other places. Developments in politics, the economy and communication networks at the turn of the Northern and the Southern Song dynasties brought important changes to the ways by which the cult of King Zhang was spread, and brought the cult to its heyday in the southeastern areas centered round Lin'an (present day Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province). The flourishing of the commodity economy in the area only provided potential for the spread of the cult, while the real dynamics rested in officials, literati and Buddhist and Taoist monks who traveled or were transferred from place to place. The imperial court also played a supportive role.
