Failure in solids is a problem of scientific and technological importance and is a complex and fundamental problem dealing with a wide range of disciplines including mechanics, physics and nonlinear science. This paper reviews the progress in studies of mesoscopic nonlinear dynamical models. It is found that these systems show universal characteristics, known as evolution induced catastrophe, which involve the conversion of globally stable evolution modes to catastrophic modes, the sample specific behavior of macroscopic failure, and the sensitivity of macroscopic properties to mesoscopic disorder.
