Two species of genus Psallus from China are described as new to science. They are: Psallus henanensis sp. nov. and Psallus fortis sp. nov. A key to Chinese species of the genus is given. Photographs of the dorsal habitus and illustrations of male genitalia and legs are provided. All type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.
Psallus henanensis sp. nov.(Figs.1,2,5,7-10,15)
Description. Male (Fig.1). Body length 3.79-3.91mm ; reddish brown; covered with recumbent, balck, simple setae and silvery, scalelike hairs.
Head subvertical, with red small spots; clypeus not visible from above; buccula light yellow, with yellow long setae; frons and vertex broad and weakly convex in dorsal view, posterior margin of vertex straight; eyes blackish brown, very big, occupying almost total height of head, eye width shorter than interocular distance; antenna yellowish brown, segment Ⅰ with 2 black setaeat the middle, bases of setae black, segments Ⅲ and Ⅳ slender than segment Ⅱ and total length shorter than segment Ⅱ ; rostrum yellowish brown, just reaching to posterior margin of metacoxa. Pronotum decline, smooth, with red small spots. Hemelytra strongly deflexed at fracture; ctmeus reddish brown, but light yellow at the base. Abdomen reddish brown, sometimes with blackish and reddish stripes. Hind femora yellowish brown, with blackish brown spots ( Fig. 15) ; tibial spines black, shorter than the diameter of tibiae, with distinct black spots at bases; tarsus and claws darkened, length of every tarsal segments almost equal; claws slender, slight curving.
Male genitalia. Genital capsule rather large. Vesica C-shaped, with four spines at apex, secondary gonopore ovoid near the apex (Figs.5, 7); left paramere boatshaped, typical of Phylini ( Fig. 8 ) ; right pammere mmcate apically, with two protrusions on either side ( Fig. 9) ; phallotheca slight curving (Fig. 10 ).
Femzle ( Fig.2 ). Body length 3.92-4.11 mm. Antennal segment Ⅱ slender than in male. Hemelytra pale brown, with deep red marks.
Holotype ♂, China, Longyuwan, Luanchuan County, Henan Prov., alt. 1 000 m, 19 May 1998. Paratypes: 10 ♂♂ , 26 ♀♀ 4, same data as holotype.
Etymology. Named for the province where the type specimens of new species were collected.
Most similar to P. guttatus in body shape and coloration, separated from P. guttatus by the structures of vesica and right paramere. Vesica in P. guttatus stout, with a sclerotized crook near the secondary gonopore, right pammere only with one protrusion; but in new species, vesica slender, without a sderotized crook; right paramere truncate apically (Fig.9). The shape of the male genitalia is similar to P. svidae, but in P. svidae, right paramere lanceolate, never truncate apically.
Psallus fortis sp. nov. (Figs.3, 4, 6, 11-14, 16)
Description. Male ( Fig.3 ). Body length 2.88- 2.90mm; dark brown; covered with recumbent, brown, simple setae and silvery, scalelike hairs.
Head subvertical, entirely blackish brown; dypeus not visible from above; buccula blackish brown, with brown long setae; from smooth, weakly convex; vertex flat and broad, posterior margin straight; eyes brown, occupying almost total height of head, eye width shorter than interocular distance; antenna yellowish brown, segment Ⅰ without black setae, segments Ⅲ and Ⅳ slender than segment Ⅱ, total length shorter than segment Ⅱ ; rostum yellowish brown, reaching between mesocoxa and metacoxa. Pronotum decline, blackish brown, shining. Hemdytra strongly deflexed at fracture, base half of embolium and ctmeus reddish brown. Abdomen blackish brown, with shining, scalelike hairs. Genital capsule deflexed, almost occupying 1/2 of the whole length of abdomen. Femora blackish brown, reddish at apex ( Fig. 16) ; tibial spine black, with reddish brown spots at bases; tarsal segment Ⅲ darkened and shorter than segment Ⅱ ; claws brown, slight curving.
Male genitalia. Vesica stout, C-shaped, with a stubby spine under secondary gonopore (Figs.6, 11 ); left paramere boat-shaped, sensory lobe obtuse ( Fig. 12 ) ; right paramere lanceolate ( Fig. 13 ) ; phallotheca heavily sclerotized ( Fig. 14).
Female (Fig.4). Very similar to male, but smaller than male, body length 2.76 mm.
Type specimens. Holotype ♂ , China, Longyuwan, Luanchuan County, Henan Prov., alt. 1 000 m, 19 May 1998. Paratypes: 2 ♂♂ , 1♀ same data as holotype.
Etymology. Referring to the stout body of the new species.
Most easily confused with P. castaneae, but they can be distinguished by the body size and structure of male genitalia. Body length in P. caztaneae more than 3.5 mm, but new species smaller, body length less than 3 mm; vesica of P. castaneae not as new species with a stubby spine under secondary gonopore; in P. castaneae, sensory lobe of left paramere acuate, but sensory lobe of new species obtuse (Fig. 12).
