As the two classical books that keep the most abundant mythical materials in the pre-Qin period, The Classic of Mountains and Rivers and The Songs of the South show great difference when writing Gun's record in the flood myth, with absolutely different emotions to describe him. In The Classic of Mountains and Rivers Gun is greatly belittled while in The Songs of the South he receives good remarks and is canonized to the ultimate degree. From the perspective of anthropology, the book The Classic of Mountains and Rivers went through a lot of recycling and excessive amendments, especially the mythological history influenced by the Confucian thinking, which might degrade the original quality of the Gun myth itself. However, as a literary works, The Songs of the South provides a permanent guarantee for keeping the original mythology within the book itself.
