Objective To study the therapeutic effect of a Chinese vulneraria in compound prescription on the wound of skin injury, compare the efficacy of the Chinese and Western medicine in the management of skin injury, and develop a cheap, convenient and effective vulneraria. Methods A new Chinese vulneraria was confected with Flos Chrysanthemi Indici 20 g,Herba Taraxaci 30 g,Cortex Phellodendri 30 g,Radix Notoginseng 30 g,and Radix Sanguisorbae 30 g by analyzing the pharmacology and roles of various Chinese herbal medicines. A rabbit model of skin injury was established and the area of wound healing, curative rate, scar formation, and pathological sections were used as an indicator. The therapeutic effect of this vulneraria was observed and compare with that of the routine sulfadiazine silver ointment for skin wound. Results The wound healing rate of the rabbits was markedly higher in the vulneraria group than in the vacant group (P 〈 0.05). There was no significant difference in the wound healing rate between the vulneraria group and the sulfadiazine silver group (P 〉 0.05). Both of this vulneraria and the sulfadiazine silver ointment could promote the formation of epidermis, decrease the inflammatory cell infiltration, and accelerate the proliferation of fibroblasts, resulting in scar formation. Conclusions This Chinese vulneraria in compound prescription plays a significant role in skin wound healing. It can enhance the vessel reconstruction in skin wound, decrease the inflammatory cell infiltration, accelerate the proliferation of fibroblasts to form scar, and protect the wound against infection.
