Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is the most important hypoxia sensor found in the body. As a transcription regulator, it can enhance more than 100 hypoxic reactive genes expression under the hypoxia state. It can promote anagenesis, regulate neuro-stem cells proliferation/differentiation and improve the energy metabolism of the neurons after cerebral ischemic-hypoxic injuries, however, recently, someone has found that it also can aggravate the inflammatory injuries and induce the delayed death of neurons. In this article, we reviewed the progress of hypoxia inducible factor-1 and cerebral ischemic-hypoxic injuries in the past five years.
