This paper reports on two word-naming experiments aimed to explore the language-dependent effect in Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals of different proficiency. Participants were 64 students from South China Normal University. The independent variables were lexical type (daily vocabulary and academic vocabulary) and language conditions (Cantonese and Mandarin). Response time and accuracy of naming were recorded. In Experiment 1, for proficient Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals, there was no significant difference in response time between the two lexical types in the two languages. In Experiment 2, for less proficient Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals, there was significant language-dependent effect. Specifically, response time for daily vocabulary naming in Cantonese was significantly faster than that in Mandarin, and response time for academic vocabulary naming in Mandarin was significantly faster than that in Cantonese. The results from the two experiments indicate that the language-dependent effect in bilingual language production is influenced by bilinguals’ second language proficiency.
