During the Medieval Age and Renaissance period, Petrarchan poetry of “male complaint” reflected the custom of “ladies first” observed by knights at that particular time. Many English poets imitated Petrarch and created numerous poems of “male complaint”. However, it is safe to claim that this kind of poetry is less perplexed torture from “cold lady” than their self-indulgence in self-contradicted psychology of laying down double requirements on women. At the same time, male authority predominated in English society where man's fickleness was still fashionable and taken for granted. Therefore, Wyatt and Donne, in disguise of Petrarch's poetry of “male complaint”, through exchanging point of view of the two sexes in pointing out and criticizing severely the unfaithful nature of men in general, deconstructed the Petrarchan traditon of “male complaint”. By doing so, they both called on people to care for this social problem in order to wake up men to self-reproach of their inconstancy, which can be contributive to realizing a harmonious and equally true love between the two sexes.
