从狂欢化视角来看,《尾数》中铺天盖地的情欲描写,绝非为了满足消费社会大众的窥淫癖。当这些"低俗"话语积累到足够的数量,它们势必会扭转文本的意义指向,把人们对世界的思考复原、降格到"人体本位",从而对日益符号化、抽象化、教条化的价值观和意识形态实现地形学还原,同时,为踌躇不前的传统小说,寻找一条摆脱困境的通道。所以,与福尔斯其他广受好评的作品相比,《尾数》并非一个无足轻重的"尾数"。
Observed from the carnival perspective, the abundance of carnal descriptions in Mantissa is by no means to satisfy the voyeurism in the contemporary consumer society. When these "vulgar" utterances run up to critical adequacy, they certainly will reverse the signification of the fiction, and degrade our meditation of the world to the material-physical level. In consequence, the excessively symbolized, doctrinal and abstract Weltanschauung and ideology will realize their topographical reversions. Meanwhile, this transformation will help the conventional novel to find a way out of its predicament in the postmodern context. Therefore, compared with other well-acclaimed novels by Fowles, Mantissa is not a footy supplementary mantissa at all.
